Only recently moving to the area, I have tried all of the hotels in the immediate area and settled on this one as ‘my local’. Why? Because they have the best chicken parma that I have ever had, the staff are friendly, the feel is great in the bar and the restaurant, best of all, it’s only a few km’s up the road!
So – where is it, who is it I hear you ask? It’s the Happy Valley Hotel in Ovens, Victoria. This beautiful Hotel has been around since 1854 and is just beautiful.
It’s on the main road between Myrtleford and Bright and is well worth a stop in for a drink, chat and or a meal. If you’re off to the snow this coming season, be sure to stop in and check it out.
Situated conveniently on the infamous rail trail, the location is perfect for a quick drink and a rest from peddling for a while. Not only is it perfect for push bike riders, it’s great for road and off-road motorbike riders too! I know this first hand – there are so many awesome tracks and roads around the area.
The Happy Valley Hotel is the perfect place to get a group together, stay in their ‘B&B’ style accommodation and use this as your base for exploring the Alpine Region. Did I mention the wineries in the region? Just another great reason for a visit!
Back on track to the important things about the hotel – owners Mick and Jo are wonderful. A family owned and run pub, Mick has a story for everyone, a quick witted one liner and pours a mean beer! The bar atmosphere is friendly, dotted with a few locals, a well-used dart board, juke box and of course the footy playing in the background!
The meals are beautiful – whilst I have stuck to the traditional ‘pub grub’ so far, their menu and specials have something for everyone. The chicken parma is superb! Hand crumbed, baked, not deep fried, fresh bacon and melted cheese. The difference is the chicken fillet – not a skinny little fillet between some crumbs, a breast fillet.
About every 2 – 3 months, they host a seafood night – there is no question here, I am definitely in for the next one. Very popular with the locals so I am told!
Thank you to Mick and Jo for making us welcome whenever we drop in. A great meal is assured, along with a friendly smile to welcome us. Be assured you will see me again…and again! You can look the Happy Valley Hotel up on their website and Facebook.
